St. Paul Academy coach Nathan Goldman had a chat with star skier Caden Burns at the start of every Alpine high school season, with the conversation centering on how often Burns could be around during the campaign.

Burns’ skiing takes him around the country in the winter, and the travels can often conflict with high school competitions. It’s why Burns hadn’t competed in a state meet since he was a seventh grader.

But things worked out this winter for Burns, now a senior. The postseason was finally a possibility. He would indeed get a chance to compete for a state title.

And he capitalized.

Burns threw down two monster runs at Giants Ridge on Tuesday in Biwabik, finishing with the top time by more than seven-tenths of a second on each of the two hills en route to a two-run time of 1 minute, 12.97 seconds – more than a second and a half faster than the next closest competitor.

That was no surprise to Goldman, who watched Burns win every conference meet this season, as well as sections. This is what the senior does.

“Caden really has a strong ability to study the course and know where he’s going to take up time,” Goldman said. “He knows the sections that are going to be good for him, and the sections that he’s going to need to watch out for. And he was really able to just capitalize on that today and get the best out of both runs. … I’m not surprised by his win.”

But delighted, yes.

Eden Prairie’s Tate Wilker finished in second, while St. Thomas Academy sophomore Toren Piltingsrud came in fourth.

Burns has always featured a masterful blend of tactics and technique. Goldman called him “a real student of the sport.”

“He’s really strong technique-wise and is able to apply that on a course. That’s the hard thing to do, right?” Goldman said. “There’s a lot of skiers here that have really strong technique, but can’t necessarily adapt it to every variance and every different course and every different set. But Caden has a really strong ability to take that inspection run and turn it into a really good race result.”

He passes on his knowledge to his Spartans teammates. He’d bring them with him on those meticulous inspections and share his insights. Goldman called Burns “a great teammate.” He was active with the team all the way back to the group’s dryland work.

And, in the end, he provided an example of what it takes to be a champion.

“I was really excited to hear that he was going to be able to be here for the whole year this year, and excited to see him qualify last week and sections and have a great night tonight,” Goldman said. “Really a fun way for him to kind of end that senior year. That’s a great way to go out.”

Minnetonka team wins

Minnetonka won the team title with 176 points. Cook County was second with 149, and Hill-Murray was third with 134.

Pre-requisites and downloading the software

Before we install the Teradata SQL assistant, we have to make sure that the below dependent software is installed on the system.

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or later
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment 1.4.2_06 or later
  • Teradata Database

Go to https://downloads.teradata.com/download/tools/teradata-tools-and-utilities-windows-installation-package and click on ‘TTU 17.00.15.00 Windows – Base’. A pop-up appears and prompts you to accept to terms and conditions, click on ‘I Agree’.The package will be downloaded to your PC.

Teradata SQL Assistant installation

Unzip the downloaded folder and run the setup file to open the installation wizard. It will ask you to choose the language. By default, English will be selected click on ‘Next’. Click on ‘Next’ to start the installation. Then you will get the license agreement. Choose the ‘I accept’ option and click on ‘Next’. It will then show the default installation folder. We can change it if we want, click on ‘Next’ to proceed.

We have to choose the features that we want to install. Select ODBC driver for Teradata, BTEQ, FastExport, FastLoad, MultiLoad, TPump, Named Pipes Access Module, Teradata SQL Assistant, and click on ‘Install’. It will then start installing all the selected modules. We can see the status of the installation through the progress bar. Once the installation is complete, we can see all these modules in our apps. 

Defining a Data Source

Open the Teradata SQL Assistant on your system. Click on the ODBC driver on the top left corner. Click on ‘Tools’ and then select ‘Define Data Source’. Switch to the ‘System DSN’ tab, click on ‘Add’, and then click on ‘Ok’. It will then ask to select a data source. Select ‘User Data Source’ and click on ‘Next’. Then we have to select a driver. Scroll down and select the ‘Teradata Database ODBC Driver’. Click on ‘Next’ and click on ‘Finish’. 

You will get a screen to fill in the details of the database. Give a name and description of the connection. Give the IP address or the name of the Teradata server. Give the username, password, and click on ‘Test’. If you get a pop-up that says ‘successfully connected to data source’, your connection is successful. Click on ‘Ok’, it will ask about storing your password. Click on ‘Yes’ and click on ‘Ok’.  You can see your newly created connection in the list of data sources.

Writing a query in Teradata SQL Assistant

You can find the data source on the left side panel. Click on it, and you will get a query window in the middle. Write the below query in the query window.

select * from dbo.tables where DatabaseName=”

will be the name of your database. Select the entire query and click on ‘Run’. You can see the list of tables that you have in your database in the ‘Answerset’ window.You can also see a list of all the queries run in the history window below.

Import data into Teradata SQL Assistant

We can import a CSV file into the Teradata SQL Assistant with the help of the import function. First, create a table in your database to which you want to import the data. The query syntax should be based on the data of your file. Write the below SQL statement in the query window and execute it.

Create table (column1 not null, ..); 

Go to the File menu and click on the ‘import’ option. Enter the below SQL statement in the query window. 

insert into values(?,?,?,?….);

will be the name of the table that you have created recently. Execute the above query by clicking on the run button. You will get an import file dialog box. Browse the file in your local file system and select your file. Click on ‘Open’ to start importing the file.

Export results to an Excel file from Teradata SQL Assistant

When you execute a SQL statement in the Query window, you can view the results in the ‘Answerset’ window. If you want to export these results into an excel file, we need to redirect the answer set before executing the query.

Select the File menu and click on the ‘Export Results’ option. Enter the SQL statement in the Query window and execute it. You will get an export file dialog box.Enter the file name, select the .xlsx file type from the ‘Save As Type’ menu. When the export is complete, you can see a confirmation message on the export bar.

Using Teradata.Net instead of ODBC

Microsoft’s .Net Data Provider for ODBC is a temporary solution for connecting to a database. It will have limited functionality like it supports only a few data types. But it does have additional features as follows.

  • The data retrieval is 8 times faster.
  • The data import is 70 times faster.
  • We can edit the data in a table with the help of an editable grid.
  • It will show the syntax errors if a query fails.
  • Macros or parallel query execution will work perfectly.
  • We can see the data in timestamp columns fully.
  • We can return CLOBs with the character set.
  • We can see all the User Defined Functions in the database tree.

Conclusion:

The Teradata SQL Assistant will be hugely advantageous to the database developers. It is a one-stop destination for data retrieval and data manipulation. The rows and columns of a table are not stored on the Teradata SQL Assistant. Instead, they are derived from the database. If there is a network issue and the connection is lost, it will automatically connect to the data source again after the connection is restored.

Research shows that low-carb diets and high-protein diets can both be effective in helping you lose fat, but which is the best choice for you?

Low-carbohydrate and high-protein diets can both be good for weight loss, but few studies have compared the two diets.

One study suggests that increasing your protein consumption matters more than decreasing your carbohydrate consumption when it comes to weight loss.

The study compared different combinations of low-carb and high-protein: normal-protein normal-carbohydrate (NPNC), normal-protein low-carbohydrate (NPLC), high-protein normal-carbohydrate (HPNC), and high-protein low-carbohydrate (HPLC) diets on weight loss over a 12-month period.

The researchers found that the higher-protein diets were most effective for weight loss and that the high-protein component was the most important factor for losing and maintaining weight.

More research is needed, but this suggests that increasing your protein intake may be a more effective way to drop excess body fat than reducing carbohydrates.

Low-carb diets are eating patterns that restrict carbohydrates. Getting 45-65% of your daily calories from carbohydrates is generally recommended. A low-carb diet must provide fewer than 130 grams of carbohydrates per day or less than 26% of total calories from carbohydrates.

Low-carb diets can vary. Extremely low-carbohydrate diets, like the keto diet, allow fewer than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day or less than 10% of calories from carbohydrates. Other low-carb diets let you eat more carbohydrates.

Studies show that low-carb diets can be effective for fat loss. They are thought to promote weight loss by increasing feelings of fullness and supporting more stable blood sugar levels after eating. This can reduce calorie consumption and promote weight loss. 

One review found that low-carb diets were more effective for improving weight loss than low-fat diets over 6-12 months.

A recent study found that a 16-week low-carb diet containing fewer than 130 grams of carbohydrates was more effective for reducing body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference than a Mediterranean diet in people with type 2 diabetes.

Other studies have found that low-carb diets are no more effective than traditional calorie-restricted diets. A different review found little difference between a low-calorie diet and a more balanced low-carb diet.

High-protein diets provide more protein than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight or 0.36 grams per pound. It’s recommended that most people get 10-35% of their daily calories from protein.

High-protein diets typically provide over 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram or 0.54 grams per pound of body weight per day, which is significantly more than the RDA.

Eating more protein can help you lose weight by slowing your digestion and stimulating the release of hormones that make you feel full, decreasing overall calorie intake.

One review found that diets in which 18-59% of calories came from protein were more effective for supporting weight loss than control diets. Eating more protein reduced body weight by 3.5 pounds (1.6 kilograms) compared to control diets.

Following a high-protein diet may also help preserve muscle mass during weight loss. Maintaining muscle mass helps preserve your resting metabolic rate (RMR), which is the number of calories you burn while at rest.

A recent review found that increased protein intake significantly prevented muscle mass decline in adults who were overweight or obese and were trying to lose weight.

Many low-carb diets are higher in protein than standard diets, and many high-protein diets are naturally lower in carbohydrates due to their high protein content. When one macronutrient (like carbohydrates) is reduced, another (like protein) must replace it. 

Following a low-carb, high-protein diet is a helpful way to lose weight because it combines the effects of reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing protein intake.

A study found that people with obesity who followed a low-carb, high-protein diet (30% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 40% fat) for four weeks lost 58% more weight than participants who followed a Mediterranean diet of 55% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 30% fat.

Another study found that a low-calorie, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet containing 33% carbohydrates, 34% protein, and 30% fat was more effective for promoting weight loss in people with obesity over nine months than a low-calorie diet containing 53% carbohydrates, 20% protein, and 27% fat.

These findings suggest that diets lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein can support weight loss. 

While low-carbohydrate and high-protein diets are helpful for weight loss, it’s best to choose a diet that suits your health needs and dietary preferences. 

Low-carb and high-protein diets are flexible, so they both make good choices for people who want more freedom. For example, if you want to lose weight and improve your blood sugar, you may follow a low-carb diet higher in protein and fat. This can promote weight loss and support blood sugar control

A diet high in protein may be a better option if you want to lose weight while building or maintaining muscle mass.

More restrictive low-carb diets with specific macronutrient ranges, such as the keto diet, may be an appropriate option for people with diabetes and obesity. Most people do not need to follow restrictive diets to meet their health goals. 

If you’re unsure which diet is best for you, consider speaking with a healthcare provider, like a registered dietitian. They can help you develop a high-protein or low-carbohydrate eating pattern that best suits your needs. 

Both high-protein and low-carbohydrate diets are effective for weight loss. However, some research suggests that increasing your protein intake may be the most important factor for increasing fat loss.
