The Frost flipped the script in the third period and overtime Wednesday in Toronto.

While Minnesota took a 2-0 lead in the contest, the ice was tilted in Toronto’s direction for the first two periods. The Sceptres held a heavy advantage in shots on goal.

But it was all Minnesota late — until it wasn’t.

Tied 2-2 entering the third period, the Frost fired 15 shots on goal to Toronto’s four in the frame to no avail. But Minnesota again controlled play in overtime, only to have a giveaway result in a breakaway.

Renata Fast beat Maddie Rooney with just 3.7 seconds left on the clock to give the Sceptres the 3-2 overtime victory.

“I had no idea (how much time was left),” Fast said in the on-ice, television interview. “When I turned and looked at the clock, I was shocked at the time. … I had no idea.”

Minnesota bested Toronto in a shootout in St. Paul just two weeks ago.

Sophie Jaques scored just 83 seconds into the affair to put the Frost up 1-0, and then assisted on Minnesota’s second tally, a goal from Brooke McQuigge to make it 2-0 in a rematch of last year’s title round.

But Toronto stormed back with a pair of goals in a two-minute span later in the second period — the first from Hannah Miller and the second from Daryl Watts to make it 2-2.

But that’s where the score stood until late in the extra session, and Sceptres goalie Raygan Kirk continued to turn away one Frost opportunity after another en route to her 27-save performance.

Rooney had 19 saves in the loss. The Frost went 0 for 2 on the power play.

While the Frost picked up a point Tuesday, they’ve now lost three of their past five contests, with just one regulation win in that span.

Even amid the struggles, Minnesota remains comfortably in second place in the PWHL standings. The Frost play in Ottawa on Thursday.

St. Paul Academy coach Nathan Goldman had a chat with star skier Caden Burns at the start of every Alpine high school season, with the conversation centering on how often Burns could be around during the campaign.

Burns’ skiing takes him around the country in the winter, and the travels can often conflict with high school competitions. It’s why Burns hadn’t competed in a state meet since he was a seventh grader.

But things worked out this winter for Burns, now a senior. The postseason was finally a possibility. He would indeed get a chance to compete for a state title.

And he capitalized.

Burns threw down two monster runs at Giants Ridge on Tuesday in Biwabik, finishing with the top time by more than seven-tenths of a second on each of the two hills en route to a two-run time of 1 minute, 12.97 seconds – more than a second and a half faster than the next closest competitor.

That was no surprise to Goldman, who watched Burns win every conference meet this season, as well as sections. This is what the senior does.

“Caden really has a strong ability to study the course and know where he’s going to take up time,” Goldman said. “He knows the sections that are going to be good for him, and the sections that he’s going to need to watch out for. And he was really able to just capitalize on that today and get the best out of both runs. … I’m not surprised by his win.”

But delighted, yes.

Eden Prairie’s Tate Wilker finished in second, while St. Thomas Academy sophomore Toren Piltingsrud came in fourth.

Burns has always featured a masterful blend of tactics and technique. Goldman called him “a real student of the sport.”

“He’s really strong technique-wise and is able to apply that on a course. That’s the hard thing to do, right?” Goldman said. “There’s a lot of skiers here that have really strong technique, but can’t necessarily adapt it to every variance and every different course and every different set. But Caden has a really strong ability to take that inspection run and turn it into a really good race result.”

He passes on his knowledge to his Spartans teammates. He’d bring them with him on those meticulous inspections and share his insights. Goldman called Burns “a great teammate.” He was active with the team all the way back to the group’s dryland work.

And, in the end, he provided an example of what it takes to be a champion.

“I was really excited to hear that he was going to be able to be here for the whole year this year, and excited to see him qualify last week and sections and have a great night tonight,” Goldman said. “Really a fun way for him to kind of end that senior year. That’s a great way to go out.”

Minnetonka won the team title with 176 points. Cook County was second with 149, and Hill-Murray was third with 134.

A Twin Cities man once listed as Feeding Our Future’s board president testified in federal court on Tuesday that he had no knowledge of the nonprofit and was surprised to see his name on its organizational chart.

Feeding Our Future founder Aimee Bock and Salim Said, a former Minneapolis restaurant owner, are on trial for their alleged roles in a $250 million scam to defraud taxpayer-funded child nutrition programs during the pandemic.

Benjamin Stayberg testified that he met Bock through mutual friends while he was tending bar at a St. Paul steakhouse. Stayberg said that he knew that Bock worked at a nonprofit, but that he did not know anything about the organization.

Stayberg, 42, said it was only later that he learned he was listed as president of the Feeding Our Future board when a newspaper reporter contacted him.

“They called my phone, and I said, ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about,’ and I hung up.” Stayberg said.

Stayberg added that he received certified mail from the Minnesota Department of Education, which distributes federal funding for the programs on the state level, but he ignored and discarded the letters. Stayberg said that he began to piece things together when a legal process server appeared at his home with a subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“There was a guy looking around my window at night, and I had dogs and we almost got into it,” he said.

Stayberg looked up his name online and saw that he was quoted in a story that the New York Times published soon after the FBI searched Feeding Our Future’s offices, Bock’s home and other locations related to the investigation.

Lead prosecutor Joe Thompson showed Stayberg a Feeding Our Future organizational chart.

“If you look at the top, your name is on it. It lists you as the board president,” Thompson said.

“Yeah, big shoes,” Stayberg replied to muffled chuckles in the courtroom.

When Thompson asked Stayberg how he came to be listed as an officer of Feeding Our Future, Stayberg replied that while he was working at the bar, Bock presented him with a document that appeared to be a petition about feeding children. Stayberg said that he signed, thinking that he was supporting a worthy cause.

Thompson then showed Stayberg copies of board meeting minutes and training documents that he purportedly signed, but Stayberg said that the signature on the papers isn’t his.

Minutes from November 2018 show that Stayberg attended and was interested in becoming board chair because he has “extensive knowledge of food sourcing and food costs.”

“Do you have extensive knowledge of food sourcing and food costs?” Thompson asked.

“No. I serve drinks,” Stayberg replied.

“You don’t know whether Ms. Bock wrote your name and signature?” asked Bock’s defense attorney Ken Udoibok.

“No, I do not,” Stayberg replied.

Cooperating defendant testifies

Jurors also heard testimony on Tuesday from Lul Bashir Ali, who pleaded guilty in 2023 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

In 2020, Ali, 59, enrolled her small Faribault restaurant in the federal child nutrition programs under the sponsorship of Feeding Our Future after a man associated with the nonprofit urged her to claim Lido as a meal distribution site and said that it was a good opportunity to make money.

Under questioning from Thompson, Ali said that she soon submitted reimbursement requests for 1,000 meals per day at a restaurant where she typically served no more than 50 patrons each day.

“We don’t have enough kitchen [space] we don’t have enough employees” to serve 1,000 daily meals, Ali said.

Ali said that by early 2021, Bock and others at Feeding Our Future convinced her to submit claims for as many as 1,600 meals that were never served to children.

After receiving reimbursement from the Minnesota Department of Education, which disburses the federal funds in the state, Ali said she made monthly payments of $30,000 in cash to Abdikerm Eidleh, a Feeding Our Future employee. Prosecutors have said that Eidleh, who has also been indicted in the case, fled the United States.

In her plea agreement, Ali admitted that the payments to Eidleh were illegal kickbacks. In court, she said that she had difficulty obtaining that much cash on a regular basis because of banking regulations.

Ali’s husband, Mohamed Ali Hussein, also pleaded guilty in 2023. He admitted using his nonprofit, Somali American Faribault Education, to siphon $2.1 million from government coffers by submitting false meal reimbursement requests.

Ali testified that together, she and Hussein stole $5 million, part of which they spent on two houses and a vehicle.

Ali broke down in tears when Thompson asked about the day that FBI agents showed up to question her about the fraud.

“The day they come to me, I never forget that day,” Ali said.

“Did Ms. Bock force you to write those numbers down?” Udoibok asked on cross examination.

“Absolutely not,” Ali replied. But Ali said that Bock, in video calls, encouraged her to fill out fraudulent reimbursement requests.

“‘Do this, [and] you make money,’” Ali recounted Bock telling her.

A former Como Park High School volleyball coach has admitted to sexually assaulting one of his players beginning in fall 2022.

Keng Cha, 31, of St. Paul, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct by a person in a position of authority for assaulting the teen girl. Sentencing is scheduled for April 22.

The charges say Cha “engaged her in sex on four occasions” at various locations, including the back parking lot of the school, from fall 2022 to September 2023.

According to St. Paul Public Schools, Cha was a coach at Como Park from mid-August 2022 to Sept. 29, 2023, the day he was charged.

Cha reached a plea deal with the prosecution, which agreed to dismiss a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge in exchange for his admission to an added third-degree count.

The plea deal does not include a specific sentence, which will be up to Judge Sophia Vuelo. Prosecutors agreed to ask for no more than 7½ years in prison. His attorney can argue for a stayed prison sentence to probation.

Police were sent to Como Park High School on Sept. 28, 2023, on a report of criminal sexual conduct. The girl, who was 15 at the time, told officers that Cha got her number from the volleyball roster and started texting her in the summer of 2022. After about a month, she said, Cha asked her for sexual favors and nude videos, the criminal complaint says.

The assaults always happened in the backseat of his car, she told police. In one instance, Cha picked her up at her house after practice and drove about a half-hour to a place near a lake.

As officers were talking to the teen in the school office area, Cha sent texts to her, including one that asked, “Did you say anything to anyone about us?” the complaint says.

Officers learned Cha was at the school with the athletic director, who was terminating his employment with the school district. Police took him into custody. He told police he’d been “in a personal relationship” with the student that “progressed to sexual contact,” the complaint says.

Minnesota court records show that Cha has no prior criminal convictions.

Hill-Murray coach Mark Lindemer called alpine skiing “one of the brutalist sports out there” given the variance that can occur on any given day.

Lose one edge heading around a gate on the wrong day, and your hopes and dreams — both individual and team — can be dashed. The course, the snow conditions, health, it all has to line up just right to achieve your goals, even for the best teams.

Ask the 2023-24 Pioneers girls team, whose attempt to defend a state title ended in sections when two of its stars ,Taylor Voigt and Kate Reardon, fell in soft snow conditions.

“It’s a very unforgiving sport,” Voigt said.

But the pain of the lows tends to add to the jubilation experienced amid the highs, such as the one Hill-Murray experienced Tuesday. Both Voigt and the Pioneers returned to the top of the state podium, capturing the individual and team state crowns at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik.

“It definitely feels really good, just because after last year (it) was so hard for our team,” Voigt said. “And individually, for sure, it was hard mentally. So, just coming back and proving to myself that I could do it again feels really good.”

The junior noted she had an entire offseason to think about the fall in sections. But heading into the season, she considered how she’d gone through her high in the sport — winning state as a freshman — as well as the low of last season’s conclusion.

After experiencing both ends of the spectrum, there wasn’t much left to fear.

“I just really focused on bonding with my team and just having as much fun as I can,” she said, “because you never know what’s going to happen, and (I was) just trying my best in everything I do.”

Her best was required Tuesday. Voigt threw down the best run on each hill for a combined time of 1 minute, 15.09 seconds — but even that was just four-tenths clear of the defending champ, Blake’s Vivien Pihlstrom.

Voigt’s teammate, Reardon — who exacted some revenge of her own this postseason — turned in a two-run time of 1:15.83 for a third-place finish to wrap her senior campaign.

Even with a slim advantage after the first run, Voigt felt anything but comfortable.

“Because both Kate and Vivien are really fast,” Voigt said. “I didn’t have much of a lead; I think I had like 0.17. So, it’s basically starting a new race when it’s that close. I knew I just had to do what I did the first run, but I was definitely very nervous, because those two are fast.”

Voigt said she remained positive leading up to and throughout both runs, even in the bitter cold conditions. Nothing phased her.

“She had her plan. She is a really good skier, and sometimes if she doesn’t execute the line correctly, she gets behind and gets in trouble, “ Lindemer said. “But today, she skied the correct line, had a good space and it was a good day.”

Hailey Vogt finished fifth and Shea Reardon took 11th on a day where the Pioneers shined across the board. Hill-Murray finished with 179 points, 29 more than second-place Minnetonka.

Stillwater came in fourth. Visitation’s Claire Provencher placed seventh individually.

“We always believe we can win, because we know we can,” Taylor Voigt said. “But it’s just a matter of all of us being consistent.”

That’s something the Pioneers have largely been since the middle of the season when,  Lindemer noted, the team established “good vibes” it rode all the way to Tuesday’s finish line.

“The whole team, they had a mission,” he said. “Sometimes when you have all that talent, it’s kind of a double-edged sword. And sometimes it goes well. Last year it didn’t go well, and this year it did.

“I think they went and won a couple years ago, and that was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s awesome.’ And then (after) what happened last year, I think this one means a little more to them.”

Not only are eggs expensive because of the ongoing bird flu outbreak. Now they are getting hard to find. And when stores do have eggs, consumers are starting to face limits on how many they can buy.

Eggs have become such a hot commodity that there have even been a couple of heists where thieves seem to be treating the yolks as if they were made out of gold.

The problem isn’t going away because the virus continues to mutate and infect more birdsother animals and some people. And anytime a chicken or turkey gets sick, the entire flock is slaughtered to help limit the spread.

The shortages tend to be isolated, so they might not be a problem at your store. But there’s no way to predict when a massive farm with millions of birds might get hit, and just one of those cases can cause supply problems.

As a result, prices have skyrocketed.

Jose Castillo said it’s becoming hard to keep the Cuban sandwiches and king cakes affordable at his Norma’s Sweets Bakery in New Orleans because he’s paying nearly four times as much for eggs now.

“Oh it’s hurting man. It’s crazy how expensive eggs are,” said Castillo who is one of the bakery’s co-owners. “Normally we’ll get them for $35, $40 dollars a case and now we’re paying like $118, $120 dollars.”

Hard to find

Empty egg shelves are becoming more common across the country. Sometimes shoppers have to check two or three stores or seek out a local farmer to get their eggs.

This outbreak has taken a tremendous toll on poultry since it began in 2022. Nearly 158 million birds have been slaughtered overall with the majority being egg-laying chickens.

That hurts egg supplies and drives prices higher. But with more than 300 million chickens nationwide laying eggs for breakfast and baking, the industry can usually deal with the loss of a few million birds without many disruptions.

The problems come when larger numbers of birds have to be killed. Last month more than 23 million birds were killed, and that came right after 18 million were slaughtered in December.

And when egg farmers do have to kill their entire flocks it takes at least a month or two to get new birds because the carcasses must be disposed of and all the barns must be sanitized before the farm is cleared. So the effects linger.

Limiting purchases

Trader Joe’s is capping purchases to one carton per customer each day, the Monrovia, California-based chain confirmed. That limit applies to all Trader Joe’s locations across the country.

“We hope these limits will help to ensure that as many of our customers who need eggs are able to purchase them when they visit Trader Joe’s,” the company said in a statement sent to The Associated Press Tuesday.

In addition, consumers and several local media outlets have also reported varying limits at stores like CostcoWhole FoodsKroger and Aldi locations. But not all those limits are nationwide.

A spokesperson for Kroger, for example, confirmed that the supermarket giant doesn’t currently have “enterprise-wide limits” in place — but said some of regional divisions and store banners are asking customers to cap egg purchases to two dozen per trip.

Walmart says it also hasn’t imposed national limits — except for bulkier purchases of 60-count cartons, which have been capped to two per purchase, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retail giant confirmed Tuesday.

“Although supply is very tight, we’re working with suppliers to try and help meet customer demand, while striving to keep prices as low as possible,” Walmart said in an emailed statement.

An expensive option

The average price per dozen nationwide hit $4.15 in December — more than double the price in the summer of 2023 — and it appears there may be no relief in sight, with the Agriculture Department predicting prices will soar another 20% this year.

Demand will rise as Easter approaches because eggs are popular for holiday dishes and traditional Easter egg hunts.

So when the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes new numbers on Wednesday, egg prices are almost certain to be even higher, although they will probably still be short of the record $4.82 set in January 2023.

But of course those are only average prices. Consumers are already paying more than $10 a dozen in some places across the country — especially if they choose pricier organic or cage-free options.

Beyond grocery stores limits, U.S. consumers are also facing more expensive eggs in some restaurants. Last week, Waffle House, for example, said it would add a 50-cent surcharge per egg on all of its menus.

Cracking the case

With prices that high, it’s no wonder that thieves have started to covet eggs.

Seattle police said they were investigating the theft of over 500 eggs from a restaurant last week.

Security camera footage from the early morning hours of last Wednesday showed two men entering a refrigerated shed at Luna Park Cafe in West Seattle. The men removed boxes containing some 540 eggs and liquid egg products — as well as bacon, ground beef and blueberries — and loaded them into a van before leaving the scene. The stolen breakfast items were worth about $780, police said.

Earlier this month, 100,000 eggs were reported stolen from the back of a trailer in Pennsylvania. The eggs were snatched from a Pete & Gerry’s Organics’ distribution trailer on Saturday about 8:40 p.m. in Antrim Township, according to police.

Those stolen eggs are worth about $40,000.

Minneapolis police are investigating links between six separate violent incidents which resulted in two people being shot and wounded early Tuesday morning on the city’s south side. Police say the robberies, burglaries and shootings took place over a nearly two hour period starting at 5 a.m.

In the first incident, a 54-year-old man was shot in the face while looking out his window at three armed men who allegedly broke into a nearby garage. Police say one of the men fired a shot towards the house as they were leaving. The man in the house received a non-life threatening wound.

“We do have problems with garage break-ins and garage burglaries. That’s been an issue in the Third Precinct, for sure,” said Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “Sometimes it’s people that are just looking to get inside and be somewhere warm, and other issues play into that. This seems different than the typical per week problem that we see. This is different, for sure.”

Forty minutes later, police say a 25-year-old man was seriously wounded during a robbery which took place on the 2300 block of 32 St. E which is not far from Lake Street.

Police believe at least three suspects were involved in all six incidents. O’Hara announced the department is initiating a special protocol, which enlists the help of outside agencies, in order to locate the suspects. Officers have recovered a white sedan they say was used by the men. No arrests have been made yet.

“I want to emphasize that this brazen level of violence cannot be tolerated in our city,” said O’Hara. “The MPD is committed to bringing these individuals to justice, but we need the public’s help. If anyone out there recognizes these suspects or has any information about these incidents, please come forward.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Immigration advocacy groups on Monday sued the Trump administration over its ban on asylum access at the southern border, saying the sweeping restrictions illegally put people who are fleeing war and persecution in harm’s way.

The decision outlined in one of President Donald Trump’s immigration-related executive orders is “as unlawful as it is unprecedented,” the groups — led by the American Civil Liberties Union — said in the complaint, filed in a Washington federal court.

“The government is doing just what Congress by statute decreed that the United States must not do. It is returning asylum seekers — not just single adults, but families too — to countries where they face persecution or torture, without allowing them to invoke the protections Congress has provided,” lawyers wrote.
