Rewind a quarter-century, and it was an unglamorous time for air travel in the U.S.

Some two decades after Congress deregulated the industry, gone were the glory days of inflight service at the likes of Pan Am; few passengers held rosy views of the large network airlines, from Delta, American and United to other since-shuttered brands like TWA, Continental and US Airways.

It wasn’t much better at the largely no-frills low-cost airlines where, despite the perennial success of Southwest Airlines, few carriers stood out for their on-board amenities.

But just after the turn of the century, an upstart entrant arrived on the U.S. airline stage with new jets, more legroom and those seatback screens with live television that remain synonymous with JetBlue today.

“It’s an understatement to say that they were a breath of fresh air,” industry analyst Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research Group, recalled. “They were … a completely different type of airline that made the entire industry sit up and take notice.”

Celebrating 25 years

Walking into Terminal 5 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on its hometown airline’s 25th birthday, it was impossible not to take notice of the occasion.

Just after the security checkpoint, balloons formed a giant “25.”

Along the concourse, music from Shania Twain, Britney Spears and Faith Hill offered a throwback to the days when the term “Y2K” was still fresh in America’s collective vocabulary.

A makeshift exhibit of inflight menus, aircraft safety cards, uniforms and memorabilia from past JetBlue milestones helped tell the story of the airline’s first quarter-century in operation — and the bevy of cakes and sweets made it a true birthday party.

Low-cost, but far from no-frills

From the outset, JetBlue founder David Neeleman (today the CEO of startup Breeze Airways) hoped to toe the line of being low-cost airline, but with the bells, whistles, brand vibe — and slot portfolio — to be an attention-grabbing player headquartered in the New York market.

“Cheap chic was kind of our mantra,” recalled Gareth Edmonson-Jones, a founding member of the airline’s marketing team.

Unlike the nation’s most established low-cost airline, JetBlue assigned seats, opting against copying Southwest Airlines’ long-running (but soon-to-be-defunct) open seating policy.

But the New York City-based carrier added its own simple twists like back-to-front boarding and branded snacks — while making bigger bets that an egalitarian-structured low-cost carrier could find success rooting its operations in major Northeast markets like JFK and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

It all began on Feb. 11, 2000, with JetBlue Flight 1, from Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) to JFK, which then continued on from JFK to Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Now, 25 years later, another JetBlue Flight 1 followed that same itinerary Tuesday.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

After pomp and circumstance at the gate featuring a ribbon-cutting and a proclamation from Donovan Richards, Borough President of Queens, passengers boarded the JetBlue Airbus A321 — which sported a fresh livery dedicated to the airline’s frontline workers: “This Is the ultimate team sport,” president Marty St. George said at the preflight ceremony.

On board, passengers found a bag full of mementos marking the occasion — though those surprises paled in comparison to the free round-trip ticket the carrier offered to everyone on board.

Working the flight deck and cabin: many of the same crewmembers that served the inaugural JFK-to-FLL flight in 2000.

“I was really nervous,” Newark-based flight attendant Joe Perez recalled about the flight from 25 years ago.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

“It’s pretty surreal. None of us that have been here since the beginning … ever thought 25 years out. I don’t think we thought 25 days out,” mused Rob Land, a founding member of the company who today serves as its head of government affairs.

“We just kept doing, and kept doing, and kept watching it grow,” Land said.

Egalitarian no more

Indeed, JetBlue grew — but it also evolved.

Once known for uniformity on its planes — which flew almost exclusively domestic flights – today the carrier sports a bona fide international business class cabin with its premium Mint seats on dozens of jets.

ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY

The airline now flies to Europe, having launched service in recent years to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin and Edinburgh. Madrid is up next, later this year.

Like the larger legacy carriers, the JetBlue of 2025 relies also heavily on its loyalty program; look no further than the application for a cobranded TrueBlue credit card passengers on board the milestone flight found in their goodie bags.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

Today, some in the industry credit JetBlue’s arrival on the scene 25 years ago with inspiring on-board upgrades at many of its competitors this century.

You don’t have to look hard, now, to see the virtual arms race among carriers looking to outdo one another with new cabin technology, services and seats.

“I think JetBlue taught everybody how to do it,” Edmonson-Jones said. “It was the impetus to make everything better.”

A turbulent few years

Yet, JetBlue’s first quarter-century wasn’t without its challenges — and not just the February 2007 operational meltdown that inspired the first known YouTube apology video in U.S. airline history, and a customers bill of rights that followed.

In recent years, JetBlue has faced its share of hurdles.

The company hasn’t turned a profit since before the coronavirus pandemic. Its big bets of recent years — an alliance with American Airlines and a merger with Spirit Airlines — both saw their demise in federal court.

Spirit Airlines headquarters in Florida. SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

A sizable portion of its fleet has faced prolonged grounding due to an engine issue at a third-party supplier — a problem facing many airlines, globally.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

Its reputation for operational reliability hasn’t exactly been a feather in its cap in recent years, either, owing in part to its deep ties to the nation’s most congested airspace, where air traffic control-fueled delays are common (though a 25-minute delay for Tuesday’s milestone flight was due to a minor maintenance issue).

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

Meanwhile, in the eyes of some industry analysts, the carrier has seen the innovative streak that defined its early years challenged — often surpassed – by its competitors.

“Delta, American and United are all much larger than Jetblue, much financially stronger,” Harteveldt said.

“The challenge is, what does JetBlue do going forward? How does it grow?” Hareveldt continued, alluding to sweeping network cuts the airline made last year, which saw it double down on East Coast leisure traffic in an effort to purge unprofitable routes.

“If you don’t live in Boston, New York City or Fort Lauderdale,” Harteveldt said, “JetBlue is pretty much useless to you as a traveler.”

Looking forward

Yet, the carrier remains optimistic about the strategy that will define its 26th year and beyond.

Last year, JetBlue unveiled a sweeping plan to return the company to profitability, which included hundreds of millions of dollars worth of investments into the premium options that travelers are craving en masse.

That’ll start with the airline’s first-ever airport lounge at JFK, slated to open by the end of 2025. A second in Boston will open shortly after.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

Next year, the carrier will debut its domestic first-class cabin. The new recliners will eliminate a key gap in its product offerings on planes that don’t sport its Mint cabin.

Yet, the premium cabin will also cement the notion that JetBlue is a changed airline from the one that launched 25 years ago this week — no longer solely focused on its coach (or “core”) cabin.

“We have evolved. We’ve added products — only because we’ve sensed people want them. And when we add them, there’s great demand,” Land said, speaking to TPG at 37,000 feet, just before the aircraft began its initial descent into Fort Lauderdale.

JetBlue’s 25th anniversary flight lands at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

“But I’m proud we didn’t [evolve] at the expense of basically screwing people,” Land added. “Even the person on this flight, right now, in what is deemed the ‘least desirable seat,’ I would stack up against any airline’s most desirable coach seat.”

Time will tell how that philosophy, combined with new investments and products, will perform in the airline’s next 25 years.

Taiwan’s self-proclaimed “luxury airline” is expanding once again in the U.S.

This time, Starlux Airlines is adding service to Southern California’s Ontario International Airport (ONT) from its hub at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). Four-times-weekly service begins June 2, and flights are already available for sale.

Westbound flights depart Ontario at 11:10 p.m. and arrive two days later at 4:15 a.m., all times local. The flights from Taipei to Ontario take off at 8:05 p.m. and land at 5:05 p.m. on the same day.

Starlux will operate this new route on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Pro tips: The biggest mistakes people make with travel rewards credit cards

Introductory round-trip fares for the new route start at around $1,300 in economy and climb to nearly $6,000 for a business-class seat.

However, some early movers were able to save serious money by using mileage redemptions as soon as the flights were loaded into the schedules. Starlux released saver award availability in business class on this new route, and — for a time — there were up to two seats available from July through October in each direction.

The availability has since dwindled, but for the next time such an opportunity arises, know that the best way to book Starlux awards is via the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan program, which charges just 75,000 miles for a one-way transpacific saver Starlux redemption. Note that you can transfer points from Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy to Alaska Airlines, and you can indirectly send American Express Membership Rewards points to Alaska Airlines via the HawaiianMiles program.

Starlux will deploy its Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which features four first-class suites, 26 business-class pods, 36 premium economy recliners and 240 standard economy seats, on the new route.

I had the opportunity to fly on Starlux’s A350 for its inaugural U.S. departure from Los Angeles, and the experience was certainly a cut above most other transpacific business-class options. The seat is among the best in the sky, and combined with Starlux’s above-average catering and amenities, I had a fantastic flight.

Starlux already flies from Taipei to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Ontario, California, might not’ve been the city that you’d expect Starlux to launch next, especially since the airline’s CEO has previously teased longer-haul routes to New York and Chicago as possible future contenders.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

That said, Ontario is already well connected to Taipei with a China Airlines flight that even got upgraded to daily service back in April 2023, Cirium schedules show. (Ontario doesn’t have any other service to Asia, per Cirium.)

Southern California has a big Taiwanese population, so this new route is likely designed to tap into the point-to-point traffic heading to Taiwan.

Of course, Starlux also operates a big hub in Taipei, so flyers can connect onward to plenty of destinations throughout Asia.

Eventful start to 2025

These tokens for SkyMiles elite members come amid an eventful start to the year for Delta and its loyalty program.

The carrier held a massive spectacle of an event in January at the Sphere in Las Vegas, laying out a slew of changes coming to the airline (including some that customers will see in 2025), from Bluetooth-capable seatback screens to an onboard partnership with YouTube and a tie-up with Uber that’ll allow Delta members to earn SkyMiles on rides and mobile food deliveries.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

On the other hand, February also brought new Sky Club restrictions for members who get access via an American Express card.

Did you miss out on getting a Medallion luggage tag in 2025? Delta’s cobranded Amex cards offer an inside track to SkyMiles elite status. And, right now, some come with hefty welcome bonuses of 100,000 miles or more for new applicants (terms apply) — potentially offering a jump start on that next redemption and elite status in the new qualification year.

I generally divide my credit card perks into two categories: annual statement credits or lounge access that I actively try and use to enhance my travel experience, and travel insurance and purchase protection, which I hope to never need but appreciate being able to count on when I do.

But if you have a credit card as an authorized user, are you covered by an issuer’s travel insurance policy?

Benefits to authorized users

There are plenty of good reasons to add someone as an authorized user to your card, including sharing benefits with them, such as travel credits or other monthly statement credits like the $7 Dunkin’ credit (up to $84 per calendar year; enrollment is required and terms apply) on the American Express® Gold Card.

DELMAINE DONSON/GETTY IMAGES

Authorized users also earn points on their spending and even help your family members build credit, though remember that you’ll ultimately be responsible for any purchases they make on the card.

Many cards allow you to add authorized users for free, but premium cards often charge a fee. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® charges $75 per year to add an authorized user.

Authorized users and travel insurance

Understanding the terms of your insurance coverage before you need to use it so you don’t make any hasty and expensive mistakes based on incomplete information. As a reminder, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers the following travel insurance benefits:

Furthermore, to be covered by the card’s insurance, you must charge all or a portion of the trip cost to your card or have used Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Covered Travelers do not need to be traveling with the cardholder for benefits to apply.

There’s no differentiation between primary cardholders and authorized users, so I called Chase and spoke to a benefits administrator to confirm. The good news is that not only are authorized users covered, but in this case, their immediate family members would be as well. “Cardholder” doesn’t just mean the primary account holder — it means any user whose name is embossed on the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card.

CHASE.COM

For trip delay reimbursement, the coverage of family, which includes domestic partners, is similarly defined as above:

CHASE.COM

To be eligible for this trip delay reimbursement coverage, all or a portion of your trip must’ve been booked using your Chase Sapphire Reserve card, including travel booked using Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Bottom line

Some people balk at paying the $75 a year fee to add authorized users to the Chase Sapphire Reserve, but when you consider that they earn full travel insurance coverage as if they were the primary cardholders, this becomes a much better value proposition. This benefit has saved me hundreds of dollars over the years, and Chase is known to offer some of the most comprehensive and generous coverage in the industry on its Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Sapphire Reserve card.

Delta Air Lines is offering Delta SkyMiles members another path to earn Medallion Qualification Dollars toward elite status with its Stays and Cars promotion. You can earn 1 MQD per base dollar spent on hotel bookings, vacation rentals and car rentals booked through the Travel Extras portal by March 31 for travel completed by April 30.

Earn Delta MQDs on hotels and vacation rentals

DELTA AIR LINES

During this promotion, you’ll earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on hotel stays and vacation rentals booked through Delta’s travel portal. This is in addition to the redeemable SkyMiles (members earn a minimum of 2 miles for every dollar spent on the base hotel rate) you ordinarily earn for every dollar spent at most hotels booked through the Travel Extras portal.

Per the promotion’s terms, you can only earn on the base cost of the hotel room — before taxes and fees are charged at the time of booking.

For example, here’s what you could earn for a two-night stay at the Moxy Minneapolis Downtown:

  • 390 MQDs
  • 781 SkyMiles (worth $9.37 based on TPG’s February 2025 valuations)
DELTA AIR LINES

Earn Delta MQDs on rental cars

Additionally, participants earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on base car rental rates for every completed rental booking.

You will not earn MQDs on charges like taxes, one-way rental fees, fuel services and tolls. Additionally, when booking cars through Delta’s portal, you can earn bonus SkyMiles with rental car partners and if you hold elite status with Delta.

For instance, Hertz is a Delta partner. If you decide to book a rental car with the company through Delta, you’ll earn 4 miles per dollar spent on qualifying rentals as a basic SkyMiles member. Additionally, depending on your Delta elite status, you can earn 5 to 8 miles per dollar spent on qualifying rentals.

As another example, say you decide to book a Hertz rental car at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) through Delta’s portal. Here are how many MQDs and SkyMiles you can earn on a two-day-long rental with the current promotion:

  • 113 MQDs
  • 456 SkyMiles (worth $5.47 based on TPG’s February 2025 valuations)

Important terms

As always, make sure to read the full terms and conditions of this promotion before you book.

One of the most important things to note is that you can only earn MQDs if your name appears on the credit card you pay with. Delta will not credit MQDs if the first and last names on the card do not match the information on the SkyMiles account.

After you travel, it can take up to eight weeks to receive the MQDs.

Additionally, those with a Delta cobranded card can earn up to $100 or up to $250 Delta Stays statement credits annually when they use the card to purchase prepaid hotels or vacation rentals through Delta Stays. Prepaid Delta Stays reservations qualify as Delta purchases on cobranded cards.

Delta cardholders — including those with the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card — earn 3 miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases. Cardholders of the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card earn 2 miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases.

Bottom line

This promotion is another way to earn Delta status without flying. By earning MQDs through nonflight activities outside one of the airline’s cobranded cards, this promotion sets a new precedent for Medallion status.

Delta appears to be sending emails about this promotion to SkyMiles members in batches — we hope to see more ways to earn MQDs like this one in the future.

Save now: Apple AirTags on sale at lowest-ever price

The cards we feature here are from partners who compensate us when you are approved through our site, and this may impact how or where these products appear. We don’t cover all available credit cards, but our analysis, reviews, and opinions are entirely from our editorial team. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page. Editor’s Note

This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

We are happy to report that Apple AirTags are on sale on Amazon for the lowest price we’ve ever seen.

At the time of publication, a four-pack of Apple AirTags was available on Amazon for just $69.99 — almost 30% less than the usual retail price of $99. This is the lowest price we’ve seen for a four-pack of AirTags.

If you purchase a four-pack, you are essentially paying $17.50 per AirTag. You can also buy a single AirTag at a reduced cost of $22.99, which is only a few dollars higher than the lowest-ever price of $19.

For price comparison, if you buy directly from Apple, four Apple AirTags will cost $99, and an individual AirTag will cost $29.99. So, Amazon’s current pricing is an absolute steal.

To buy: Apple AirTag (pack of four), $69.99; Apple AirTag (individual tag), $22.99

You could lower the price even further if you combine additional ways to save on Amazon purchases.

There is no shortage of choices for a cruise to the Caribbean — the most popular place in the world for cruising. More than 200 cruise ships spend at least part of every year in the region. Cruise-selling websites list thousands of individual Caribbean sailings.

This can be great news for would-be Caribbean cruisers, but it also can be overwhelming. With so many options, where do you even begin? Which one of these ships and sailings is the best?

We get the latter question a lot — and we always answer the same noncommittal way: It depends. The best ship and sailing in the Caribbean for whom? The best for us? The best for you? The best for your kids?

When picking the best cruise in the Caribbean, as with choosing the best cruise anywhere, a lot comes down to tastes and preferences. Some people love the big-resort feel of the biggest-of-big ships. Others are horrified by the very idea of them. Some people demand (and are willing to pay for) the highest levels of luxury. Others are on tight budgets. The best cruise for a family with kids isn’t necessarily the same as the best cruise for a couple looking for romance.

What kind of cruiser are you? It’s important to think that through before narrowing down your choices.

The bottom line is that the best Caribbean cruise for you depends a lot on your travel style. Below, we’ll help you narrow the choices by looking at Caribbean cruises by broad category type. The good news is that in the Caribbean, at least, there really is something for everyone.

Best Caribbean cruise for megaresort fans: Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. ROYAL CARIBBEAN

If your idea of a great vacation is a week at a big, bustling resort filled with every sort of amusement known to humans, you’ll probably want to start your Caribbean cruise search with a look at the biggest vessels from lines like Royal Caribbean.

If “more is better” is your mantra, skip the search and look up Icon of the Seas. At 248,663 gross tons, the 20-deck-high vessel is the biggest cruise ship in the world. No ship in the Caribbean is quite like it.

Some of Icon of the Seas’ wow factors include an incomparably massive water park with six waterslides, a cantilevered infinity pool, a huge glass dome encompassing an indoor AquaTheater for acrobatic and diving shows, and innovative new cabin and suite layouts for families.

Royal Caribbean offers seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings departing from Miami aboard Icon of the Seas through April 2027.

Eastern Caribbean itineraries vary but include stops at St. Maarten; St. Thomas; Nassau, Bahamas; Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and the line’s private island Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. At the time of publication, prices for the seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise started at $1,442 per person.

Western Caribbean ports of call include Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Nassau; and Perfect Day at CocoCay. Prices start at $1,434 per person, based on double occupancy.

With at least two sea days per sailing, passengers will have ample opportunity to explore all the attractions the ship has to offer.

Best Caribbean cruise for families: Disney Cruise Line

Disney Wish. STEVEN DIAZ/DISNEY CRUISE LINE

In the family cruise arena, it’s hard to top Disney Cruise Line. As you might expect, the line caters heavily to families in every aspect of the cruise experience — from onboard attractions to family-friendly cabin configurations.

Disney’s attention to detail transfers to its voyages on the sea. Kids receive the royal treatment with high-quality kids clubs and onboard attractions like the 765-foot-long AquaDuck water coaster on some ships. Plus, they have plenty of opportunities for photo ops with their favorite Disney characters.

Parents will find opportunities to unwind at adults-only sun decks and pool areas that are closed to kids; there are also bars and clubs that are off-limits to anyone younger than 18.

Additionally, many cabins on Disney ships feature extra pull-down bunks and pull-out sofas that will allow four or even five people to stay in a single cabin. Most cabins have two bathrooms — one with a sink and a toilet, and one with a sink and a shower or tub. This is rare in the cruise world, and it’s designed to make it easier for families sharing a room to get ready.

The AquaDuck on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy. DISNEY CRUISE LINE

For family fun on the high seas, try a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise aboard Disney Fantasy. Departing from Port Canaveral, the ship stops in Cozumel; George Town, Grand Cayman; Falmouth, Jamaica; and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island.

Also, depending on the time of year you sail, you can enjoy special onboard activities and events for Halloween or Christmas.

Prices for seven-night Caribbean sailings start at $1,607 per person, based on double occupancy.

Best budget Caribbean cruise: Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Glory. CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE

The undisputed leader in the Caribbean cruise market when it comes to affordability is Carnival Cruise Line. Not only does Carnival offer lower fares than you’ll find at most rival lines, but it also purposely deploys its Caribbean-focused vessels to a wider variety of U.S. home ports than any other line. The idea is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach a Caribbean-bound Carnival ship by car, saving the cost of flights.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line ships and itineraries

Carnival ships are packed with fun-focused attractions, including multiple pool areas, water parks with waterslides, basketball courts, miniature golf courses and even roller coasters on select ships.

The cruise line is known for its multitude of included-in-the-fare dining spots. Every vessel has two main dining rooms and a casual buffet eatery. Most ships feature two of the best quick-serve poolside dining venues you’ll find on mass-market ships at sea: BlueIguana Cantina for burritos and tacos, as well as Guy’s Burger Joint.

Carnival ships sail to the Caribbean from all the major Florida cruise hubs but also from ports as far-flung as New York City; Baltimore; Norfolk, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans; and Galveston, Texas.

The line’s eight- to 10-day Eastern Caribbean sailings from New York City on Carnival Venezia are a solid choice for budget-minded travelers seeking an affordable Caribbean escape from the East Coast. Passengers can swim with graceful stingrays in Gibbs Cay or tour historic Cockburn Town during a port call in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos. In Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, you can take an exciting all-terrain-vehicle tour through the lush backcountry.

Rates for eight-night sailings out of New York start at $731 per person, based on double occupancy.

Best Caribbean cruise for solo travelers: Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Prima. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

When it comes to catering to solo cruisers, the king of the hill in the Caribbean is Norwegian Cruise Line — at least among the big-ship lines. The Miami-based cruise operator in 2010 began adding entire zones for solo travelers to the center of every new ship it deployed to the region.

You’ll now find these zones on Caribbean-focused vessels like Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Prima. Each of these solo cruiser zones, which are unrepeated in the industry for now, includes dozens of cabins for solo travelers, all clustered together. There is also a private lounge with a bar and a TV where solos can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

Known as Studio cabins, the tiny solo rooms in these complexes measure just 100 square feet, but they’re superbly designed to maximize storage space. The cabins’ futuristic design and the multicolored mood lighting are particularly noteworthy.

Related: These 8 cabins are great for travelers cruising alone

One big caveat with Norwegian’s solo cabins: They’re mostly inside rooms without an ocean view. That said, most of these interior-facing cabins have a window that looks out onto a corridor. Another downside is that these solo cabins are so popular that they often sell out far in advance at prices not much better than booking a cabin for two.

Single cruisers seeking some extensive rest and relaxation should consider the seven-night New England sailings out of New York City on Norwegian Getaway.

The 3,963-passenger ship is chock-full of restaurants, bars, nightlife spots and fantastic entertainment, including Broadway shows. With Norwegian’s laid-back dining plan, solo travelers aren’t locked into set dining times and table mates, so they can invite newly made friends to dinner at a time convenient to everyone.

On its seven-night New England sailings, Norwegian Getaway visits Newport, R.I.; Portland and Bar Harbor in Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick.

Rates for a Studio cabin start at $877 per person.

Best Caribbean cruise for luxury lovers: Windstar Cruises

The 342-passenger Wind Surf. WINDSTAR CRUISES

For those who wouldn’t be caught dead on a vessel that doesn’t have butler service and free-flowing caviar, the Caribbean can be a tough spot. Many of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships spend a lot of time in Europe and Asia or gallivanting around the globe on exotic world cruises. For some luxury lines, the Caribbean is almost an afterthought.

Also, you’ll usually only see luxury sailings in the Caribbean during the winter months — from December through March. For luxury cruises in the Caribbean, the period between April and October is pretty much a dead zone.

However, if an upscale cruise experience is what you seek, Windstar Cruises can deliver. The line’s seven-night “Classic Caribbean” itinerary aboard Wind Surf should be on your radar.

Windstar Cruises specializes in small ships carrying between 148 and 342 passengers each. The line calls them yachts, but the ships are structured more like tiny cruise ships with indoor lounges and communal dining rooms.

The 342-passenger Wind Surf features six decks, five masts and four types of cabins (all with windows only, no balconies). Accommodations range from 188-square-foot regular cabins to 376-square-foot suites.

Water sports platform. WINDSTAR CRUISES

Windstar Cruises ships also include a water sports platform. On select days when the ship is anchored (not docked at a pier) — and the weather, government regulations and planets align — passengers can enjoy various water sports like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and swimming right off the back of the ship. You can also lounge on a float or admire the glittering, yacht-dotted harbor from a large foam flotation island.

Wind Surf is also home to multiple dining venues, a pool and hot tubs, a boutique, a spa and a fitness center.

The seven-night Classic Caribbean itinerary begins and ends in St. Maarten. It features sun-kissed beaches, secret coves and gin-clear waters in idyllic ports of call like St. Barts, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guadeloupe, Dominica and St. Lucia.

All-inclusive rates start at $2,622 and cover Wi-Fi, gratuities and unlimited beer, wine and cocktails. Cruise-only rates start at $1,999.

Best adults-only Caribbean cruise: Virgin Voyages

Scarlet Lady cruise ship. VIRGIN VOYAGES

Richard Branson-backed Virgin Voyages appeals to vacationers averse to the traditional cruising experience who crave a hip, party atmosphere. Ships are blissfully void of children — cruisers must be over 18 — making it a prime choice for an adults-only cruise.

Virgin has unique onboard offerings like the first tattoo parlor at sea, lots of included dining options, free exercise classes and an app that lets you simply shake your phone to order Champagne (which is delivered to you just about anywhere on board). Also, fares include all meals, soda, basic Wi-Fi and crew gratuities.

Virgin’s first vessel, Scarlet Lady, launched in late 2021. The line added Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The debut of the line’s fourth ship in the fleet, Brilliant Lady, has been delayed until September 2025.

Ships are filled with stylish, adult-oriented bars promising a hopping scene late into the night, as well as hipster venues like a colorful karaoke lounge. Onboard entertainment is inventive and often edgier than what you might see on traditional cruises.

Cabins sport a minimalist look with futuristic touches, and suites exude a rock ‘n’ roll vibe with in-room turntables and peekaboo showers.

The line’s “Dominican Haze” five-night itinerary to Bimini, Bahamas, and Puerto Plata sails out of Miami on the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady. With two sea days, the sailing offers a good mix of onboard activities and port-of-call exploration. Party by the pool or swim with stingrays during your day at Virgin Voyages’ Bimini Beach Club. Chill out on a powder-white beach or go waterfall hunting in the jungle in the Dominican Republic.

Rates start at $913.75 per person, based on double occupancy.

Best Caribbean cruise for couples: Holland America

FIIPPO VINARDI/HOLLAND AMERICA LINE/FACEBOOK

Holland America offers spacious midsize vessels that carry no more than 2,700 passengers, providing a relaxed and intimate cruising experience ideal for pairs seeking quality time at sea.

Caribbean-craving couples will be sated with the nine-day “Southern Caribbean Seafarer” cruise sailing out of Fort Lauderdale aboard Rotterdam. The 2,650-passenger ship, which debuted in 2021, is Holland America’s newest.

In addition to a main restaurant and casual buffet, Rotterdam features five separate specialty dining venues — everything from a pan-Asian eatery to an upscale steakhouse. Extensive onboard entertainment includes clubs featuring blues and classic rock, as well as various musical performances in the main theater. Cultural programming, pickleball lessons, and food and wine tastings are among the complimentary activities available.

Of course, relaxing by the pool and indulging in a restorative spa treatment are also options.

On the Southern Caribbean Seafarer cruise, couples can visit Curacao, Aruba and Half Moon Cay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas. An overnight stay in Curacao allows cruisers to dive deeper into the island’s history, culture and natural lures. Aruba offers diversions below and above the water, from submarine tours and snorkeling to hikes and off-roading adventures. The stop at pristine Half Moon Cay provides an easy and relaxing beach day.

Rates start at $799 per person, based on double occupancy.

Elasticsearch Filters – Table of Content

What is Elasticsearch Filters

The bucket is the collection of documents which matches with associated filters. Every bucket is associated with a filter. In elasticsearch filter aggregation defines multi buckets. Filters can also be provided as an array of filters. When it receives requests which form in the form of buckets. They are filtered and those filtered buckets returned in the same order as in request. Its field is also provided as a filter array. Parameters are added in response with which the documents do not match the given filters. Those documents returns to the other bucket or in the same bucket named

Even other parameters are also used to set key for those documents to give value other than default. When the process of collecting data starts. Documents are separated and formed into buckets. Each bucket flows through filters. While the process is going on the documents which are away from parameters of the given filter are identified. Those identified files are separated and transferred into other buckets or in the same as default. To avoid them from default, new parameters are formed to create keys for them then they are formed into the new bucket. The filters which we used frequently are caught by elasticsearch automatically.

Why Elasticsearch Filters

It stores the documents in the form of JSON each of them relate to one another. This index makes the documents searchable in real time and also helps the users during searching. It is good at full text search. It is also the platform for real time search.

It is known for its time sensitive use, it works fast with rapid results. By using it users can store, search and analyse the data in huge volume and in real time. With this we get rapid results because instead of searching text directly it searches index. It processes and gives back the data as a response in the form of JSON. Its power lies in the tasks distributed, searched and indexed across the cluster. The Cluster part which helps to store data is known as node. It allows users to make copies of the index that process is called replica.

How to use Elasticsearch Filters

Generally we need various assistants and applications for searching, storing, filtering, classifying, etc. But, do you ever think that there is a single application which does all those things for us with high speed? Yes, they are named as elasticsearch filters. To use it first we have to submit our text to elasticsearch then it receives our text. Then the text was stored into buckets. Buckets are the collection of documents. When the process is going on these buckets goes through filters which are given for filtering them.

While that process the documents which do not meet the parameters of that filter were identified. Those identified documents are separated from the bucket. Those documents are transferred to other buckets or in the same bucket as default. New parameters are created for those other documents to avoid them from being defaults. Then when we search for the particular topic then our text will be found within seconds. Those text is saved as index instead of saved as text. Because the index helps us a lot in exact results. And also in a short period of time. It filters and searches the exact result for us. Which saves us a lot of time.

Benefits of Elasticsearch Filters:
  • Used for application search, which rely heavily on search for access and reporting of time.
  • Used for website search, which stores heavy text. Found useful for accurate searches. Steadily gaining place in the search domain sphere.
  • Used for Enterprise search, which allows search that includes documents search. Blog search, people search, etc. It replaced many search solutions of popular websites. We can gain great success in company intranet.
  • Logging and log analytics, which also provides operational insights to drive actions. Used for ingesting and analyzing data in real time.
  • Used for infrastructure metrics and container monitoring, many companies used it for various metrics to analyze. Which also includes gathering data, parameters which vary for different cases.
  • Used for security analytics, which access logs. Also concerns system security. In real time.
  • Used for business analytics, works like a good tool for business analytics. It includes learning the curve for implementing this product. Which is felt as a good feature by many organizations. It also allows non technical users, for creating visualization and performs analytical functions.
  • It has rebutted distributed architecture which helped a lot in solving queries. And data processing which is easy to maintain.

Drawbacks of Elasticsearch Filters:
  • It has the ability of searching when there is only the text presented only in data.
  • The syntaxes for queries made simpler and it has auto sharding.
  • The documents which they maintain are poor documents, not easy at the first contact.
  • When we came to pricing it felt good at free trial. But there is a significant jump suddenly into other levels of paid services.
  • Difficult architecture to optimize. And also easier to understand its bottlenecks.
  • The encryption which we need is at rest. It has a penalty for performance when using the linked documents.
  • Sometimes to deal with it you need database knowledge.

Weekday / Weekend Batches

Conclusion

Finally, companies found a great application for their maintenance. Which helps the organizations a lot in many necessary works. They are like searching, storing, filtering, and organizing into the index. The index is the best feature maintained by it. Because generally search engines save the text as the data presents. But instead it saves the data in the index. Which helps a lot while searching it gave accurate results. With in low time which also saves a lot of time. The requests made by customers and the result it gave as feedback is in the form of JSON. However, its special features gain its position in the market and even holds it in future as the best and useful application for the development of organizations.
